The PEFMED project falls entirely within the framework of the French policy of sustainable development and reduction of the impact on the environment.
In his speech of November 27, 2018, the French President of the Republic highlighted the method deployed by the government in terms of ecological transition (1). This program is part of the national “low carbon” strategy that affects all levels of society.
In the agrifood sector in particular, in the magazine “Process Alimentaire” of December 2018 one of its articles title is “France’s world leader in sustainable food” (2). In fact, according to the latest Food Sustainability Index developed by the Barilla Center for Food and Nutrition (BCFN) and the Economist Intelligence Unit, France once again wins the prize for sustainable food. This index takes into account data from 67 countries on 37 indicators in nutrition, waste and sustainable agriculture.
The European PEFMED project, in which CRITT Agroalimentaire PACA is a partner, is in line with these articles. Indeed, its main objectives are the reduction of environmental footprints and the implementation of green innovations along the agrifood chain.
As part of this project, tools have been developed to go further in the European concept of environmental footprint of products,
– With, for example, the establishment of social-economic indicators corresponding to the specific geographic productions of the Mediterranean area,
– Or with product life cycle analyzes up to the comparative study between different packaging solutions, for a defined product and scope of study.
This type of initiative will, we are sure, allow us to go further in achieving good results in the field of sustainable food, in France and in Europe.
